Despite what you may have been told, size does matter. Especially when it comes to your low-end! This week’s mix is packed with hefty kicks and thick basslines from Kalahari Oyster Cult’s label boss: Rey Colino.
This is the first volume of Kalahari Oyster Cult’s new mix series aptly titled ‘The Sizeable Mix’. Despite all my digging there is not much information online about the label’s origins and it’s operations, but according to Resident Advisor it is an “Amsterdam-based label run by Colin Volvert (aka Rey Colino). An oyster of the old school whom nobody can open.” Take a deeper look under the hood, and you’ll discover a who’s-who of electronic producers that are pushing the underground sound. These include the likes of Reptant, Roza Terenzi, Fantastic Man, and recent YNC feature Priori.
On top of running the label, Volvert also manages the independent distribution and production company One Eye Witness mainly focused on releasing the label and label-collaborators via vinyl. In an interview for Horst, Volvert’s says he built his label around the 90’s sounds. Implementing 90’s nostalgia, with the current sound design, because that is the music that he plays and loves. This guiding ethos, along with providing high-quality production and distribution of vinyl’s through One Eye Witness, results in the cult following surrounding his small but heavy hitting label.
In the kickoff volume for what surely will be a mix series to follow, Rey Colino showcases an hour and twenty minutes of his label’s diversity. Ranging from house to trance to techno and beyond, the mix as a whole is hypnotic and loopy. What ties it all together is the weighty drive of a kick or bassline throughout and that touch of the 90’s rave sentiment. Sizeable for sure. It’s what I imagine might be playing in a dystopian planet’s underground club 3000 years from now even with the nostalgic undertones. Not the high-tech and shiny, Star Trek-ian space ship venue, but a dirty, dusty, cavern in the underbelly of an old utopia’s machinery.
Before you delve into deep space on your own journey in search of this mythical club, I’ll leave you with these guiding words transmitted from that future on Kalahari Oyster Cult’s bandcamp page.
“Reality, Truth, Knowledge.
A journey through the night.
My senses aroused by dreams from another life.”
Ideal for: Blasting off into space.
Track of the Mix: Both of my favorite tunes in this mix I was unable to find, so I can only assume they are unreleased. The break on the track that comes in around 9:52 is a well placed rest from the energy of the intro tracks without taking away from the mixes vibe, and the track at 45:00 makes me want to bounce all night like it’s the 90’s.
Track List: From what I gather, many tracks are forthcoming. You must dig for these pearls.
