I welcome you to the world of bing. A musical project created by an unknown producer. bing is beyond just another DJ moniker. bing is a character with a storyline. This character has been thoughtfully built and introduced to the world through their music, graphics, and videos. Between each track release, more information is revealed about the character and the world they inhabit, creating an immersive experience for the consumer. What I know so far is that the character, bing, resides in a place called the Shards with his trusty sidekick NT. bing and NT look like avatars straight out of Runescape which is probably why I like them so much (see picture below). They appear to be on a mission to obtain ‘relics’, lost memories in the form of audio recordings, songs, or graphics. Most of this information I have gathered from following bing’s Instagram posts but have also gotten supplemental information from vimeos or SoundCloud posts unlocked through passwords hidden in other bing content. The most recent example of this bonus content can be found in today’s featured mix, in which a password is stated by NT during a transition between two songs. Going through the vimeo link in their bio, the password unlocks a private SoundCloud link with an unreleased bing track available for download. I’ll let you see if you can find the password hidden in the mix ;) (it’s a DJ tool). As you can see, I am an absolute sucker for the bing lore.

bing has emerged alongside a new wave of artists that have placed focus beyond just music. As Debba mentions in his hour of the show, bing is an affiliate of the elusive CloudCore label. Like bing, CloudCore has an air of mystique and playfulness. They have created a unique way of consuming their content that has me hooked. Every Friday, they release one track for purchase via Bandcamp. Each release is only available for one week, after which they are added to the CloudCore archive. The archive is hosted on their website CloudCore.ninja and is accessed via special CloudKeys. To obtain a key you must purchase a release before it is archived. Unlocking the archive gives users additional songs to download (usually previous songs that have been archived). This past Friday, I unlocked the archive and was gifted 4 free songs along with my purchase. Deals.

bing's 100% production mix for Debba on Voices radio slaps. I nearly fell out of my chair listening to it for the first time (and I was like baby, baby, baby ooo). This is their second 100% production mix, and is somehow better than the first one I listened to a little over a year ago. Something about a 100% production mix is special, it usually features several unreleased tracks, and for some reason flows better. It feels like one solid element rather than separate songs. I originally wanted to post about bing immediately after listening to their original 100% production mix, but so little was known about the artist. They hadn't shared any posts on Instagram or Vimeo so writing a full-length post would have been a challenge. With their 2nd 100% production mix and more information about this mysterious artist, I thought it was time to share. The 2nd is packed with weapons, each track better than the previous. The mix starts off with Bon Iver-like vocals that immediately draw you in, setting the tone for the rest of the journey. As expected with bing, a storyline is weaved between these tracks. Snips from their Instagram are cut up, modulated, and threaded into the mix. If you want to skip to bing's mix, it starts at the 1-hour mark, but Debba's first hour kicks off the vibe right.
This past Friday, bing did something I wasn’t expecting. They pulled back the curtains and shined a little light on the human behind bing. Alongside the release of their 2 track EP azil/nazin, they shared a Tumblr post (see bio) detailing their creative journey over the past two years and the significant impact the loss of their father had on it. After reading bing’s post, to say impact seems like an understatement, their music has been dedicated to their father. In their post, they reflect on how their work has unintentionally become about their father's battle with cancer. bing feels guilty about making it about himself, as their father was the one who suffered. bing worries that as time goes on, they will forget their father and their memories of him. Instead of honing in on their anger and resentment of the world for choosing their father, bing decides to focus on a much stronger force: their love for him. In doing so, bing pledges to honor their father's memory by continuing to create and grow their work. bing thanks their supporters and announces that the proceeds from the azil/nazin release will be donated to Bowel Cancer UK. bing concludes by expressing their immense love for their father and promising to continue until their dream is realized. Check out the azil/nazin release on bandcamp if you would like to support!

bing's Tumblr post revealed the poetic nature of their posts and their deep commitment to honoring their father's memory through their work. Despite their fears of forgetting their father, they pledged to continue creating and preserving his memories. This new piece of the puzzle brought together the seemingly nonsensical videos and lore for me, revealing a deeper theme of retaining memories. Initially, I was afraid that this break in character would diminish my interest in bing lore, but instead, this new revelation has expanded my appreciation for bing as an artist and fueled my obsession with all things bing, cementing their place as one of my favorite artists.
