Summer is coming to an end, and it has me deep in my feels. My cure for most things, including end of summer blues, is music. Sometimes, a certain song or artist finds you at the right time and speaks to your current mood. While searching for new music, I came across a mix from a familiar artist, Laurence Guy. This mix snapped me out of a funk with its positivity and nostalgia – making me realize that sure summer is over, but the memories made will last a lifetime.
Laurence, a Chicago native, is an amazing producer but he’s an even better Guy (sorry, had to). There isn’t a ton of information about this Guy, but I found that he’s from Chicago, resides in London, and was raised by strippers. Nice.
After realizing music would be his passion, the Chicago born producer eventually moved to London to pursue music full time. He has since had releases on a variety of labels including Shall Not Fade, Church Records and Mule Musiq. Some notable releases by Laurence include his debut album, Saw You For The First Time, and EP, You Good Times Are Here.
For this mix, Guy starts off with a famous essay that was turned into the song, Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen). I was skeptical at first, but the message is beautiful, the beat is catchy and it’s full of some nuggets. Spoiler, you should wear sunscreen.
The first 8ish minutes are slow and had me thinking it was going to keep that vibe for an hour. Just as you start to think this, the tempo switches and the new groove is maintained throughout. I really enjoyed Laurence Guy’s style of mixing. It spans from disco, to classic house before closing out with some acid tech. As you listen, notice how he brings in new songs. He is constantly messing with the faders, cutting out songs just for a split second, but it’s enough to add fun element to the mix. While music is the sound of the notes, it is also the silence between them. Whoa…
Ideal For: Positive vibes. Chillin. Deflecting sadness
Track of the Mix: There were a few for me but may favorite moment is @ 10:37. This is when the vibe switches and I’m pretty sure this is a remix of or just the instrumental of Sensual Seduction X Snoop Dogg.
